LPD- San Antonio Class Amphibious Transport Dock:
US Joiner is providing turn-key services including Program Management, Engineering services and Materials Procurement to support the LPD-17 class at the Huntington-Ingalls Shipyards located in New Orleans, LA (Avondale) and Pascagoula, MS (Ingalls).
Utilizing new technology, innovative processes and in-house testing at Shenandoah Laboratories US Joiner developed a habitability package that exceeded the requirements of the shipbuilder and the United States Navy. The habitability package included medical spaces and a state of the art galley. US Joiner reduced the weight on both the structural fire protection and the decking systems. The US Joiner sister company—Turnbull—introduced the first three high sit up berth in the fleet.
US Joiner teamed with Huntington Ingalls Industry and the United States Navy to develop a 3D model design. US Joiner coordinated with the customer to provide the end user with the product they desired at the lowest life cycle cost.
The LPD’s transport, seabase, and land approximately 750 Marines, their equipment and supplies. The vessels carry and deploy air cushion or conventional landing craft or amphibious vehicles. The Marines also utilize helicopters or vertical takeoff and landing aircraft in amphibious assault, special operations, or expeditionary warfare missions. The ships are 105 feet wide and weigh 25,000 tons; they can travel in excess of 22 knots.
Three ships in this class have particular significance in this nation’s response to the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil on September 11, 2001. The bow stem of the New York (LPD 21) was cast in September 2004, using tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center; that ship was commissioned in November 2009. The Arlington (LPD 24) honors the city and county in Virginia, and especially the victims, where terrorists crashed American Airlines flight 77 into the Pentagon. Similarly, the Somerset (LPD 25) honors the courageous passengers of United Flight 93 who prevented the terrorists from reaching their destination by forcing the plane into the ground of this county in Pennsylvania. US Joiner is honored to have been selected to provide the turn-key package on this program including the surface combatants named in commemoration of the events honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11- the USS New York, the USS Arlington, and the USS Somerset.
The program of record is nine ships but the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps have identified a requirement for 11 ships to support the USMC expeditionary strike group missions. Five ships have been commissioned and four more ships are in various stages of construction in the Huntington-Ingalls Gulf Coast shipyards. The 12 ships of the LPD 17 class are a key element of the Navy's seabase transformation. US Joiner is under contract thru LPD 26.

T-AKE - Dry Cargo/Ammunition Ships:
US Joiner is providing complete, turn-key accommodations outfitting for the T-AKE Program currently under construction at General Dynamics NASSCO Shipyard in San Diego, CA. On this program, US Joiner worked closely with NASSCO and the US Navy to develop an innovative design for the cargo reefer spaces that significantly reduced weight and long term operating costs for this vessel. The program of record is 14 ships; 12 ships have been delivered to the Navy and 2 ships remain under construction.
The T-AKE is a dry cargo/ammunition ship that will be operated by the Military Sealift Command. An underway replenishment ship, the T-AKE will support the Navy’s Sea Power 21 vision of seabasing. These ships provide logistic lift from sources of supply either in port or at sea and transfer expendable supplies and material, cargo, ammunition, food, fuel, and repair partsl to station ships and other naval forces at sea. The T-AKE features convertible cargo holds and cargo transfer systems capable of handling food and stores or ammunition. The T-AKE will replace two classes of aging cargo ships that are nearing the end of their service lives: T-AE ammunition ships and T-AFTS combat stores ships.
The T-AKEs are 210 meters (689 feet) in length and 32.2 meters (105.6 feet) in beam, with a design draft of 9.12 meters (29.9 feet). The ships will carry almost 7,000 metric tons of dry cargo and ammunition and 23,500 barrels of marine diesel fuel. The T-AKEs have been designed to maximize cargo-handling efficiency and minimize the costs of operation and maintenance over their expected 40-year life

Littoral Combat Ship (LCS 1 and 3):
US Joiner provided program management, engineering services and materials procurement to this effort. Upon award of this ship, US Joiner joined forces with the US Navy, Lockheed Martin, Gibbs & Cox and Fincantieri Marine Group. Collectively, we addressed a vital concern for this important naval program—weight reduction. US Joiner designed, developed and supplied a lightweight modular joiner package, including an entire new furniture line, which provided significant weight savings. US Joiner also introduced the 1st “modular” T&S (Toilet & Shower) unit to be installed on a US Naval combatant vessel. The modular concept provided our customer the quality and durability required to meet the rigorous conditions anticipated for this vessel class; at the same time, our solution provided the crew with comfortable and spacious facilities. Bring your next marine outfitting challenge to our team and we will work together to solve it.
